Hey, sorry - yet another 'wireless network not connecting' Q.
At uni and have installed the disk that was given by uni, this little file and then had to follow some instructions just to check the things that needed ticking were ticked etc. Then attempted to connect and a box came up asking for my uni username, password and what i wanted to connect to - did this and i think that is now sorted as its not come up again. I'm currently using my friend's laptop (shes in the building next to me) and we've got her internet working since yesterday. Last night i was getting a 'Limited Or No Connectivity' connection (it wasn't changing the IP add, subnet mask and no DNS server values), later i was just sat staring at the screen (i have a desktop with a wireless adapter card - the routers are in each hallway of each flat) and it started connecting and i checked the values and everything was there (i took a screenshot of those) and 10 minutes later it disconnected so i overwrote the values via the TCP/IP properties, which makes the internet show up as connected but it doesnt actually work (the 'Lease obtained' and things aren't there). This morning again it connected for a short while and everything was there but the internet wasn't working for anything. MSN troubleshoot was saying the problem is Key Ports. What should i do?? I looked at a section of the instruction manual that came with the wireless adapter card and it said to open a command box and type in PING + IP address so i did that and wrote the IP address of the uni and it came back as fine. So now its constantly coming up with Limited Or No Connectivity and the values are not the ones that i should be using (im guessing they are my private values?). Last night whilst it wasn't working the sent packets were at 1,200 sent but only 200 received so is the problem at my end? And what can i do about it? Could I reset the network card? Don't particularly want to go into my case and fiddle around by myself (usually dad does all that) but i'll do it if it means getting internet! Uni doesn't want us using our own software to connect. Help very much appreciated! |

Some places insist you register your MAC address before you can get a lease. That would be my guess.

What does that mean??
Friend didn't need to do anything with the uni other than install what was on the disk. |

Would you not be better off asking the Uni IT dept. They must offer some form of support to students.

It would be worth repeating the entire instruction sequence that they gave you, just in case there's a step that didn't register. Whoever wrote it will have tested it exhaustively. Does the permission set you up to go online everywhere on campus or just on one particular wireless hub? If it's general, can you get a service elsewhere - like in the library for example?
