Default Wireless Set Up

I put this in "Introduce Yourself" & got (a very gentle) wrist slap!
So here we go again:-

I am considering dumping my current set up which is:-

AMD PC with 2G RAM,
80G HD,
Floppy (not used),
CD ROM Drive,
CD Burner(used for data inc pics)
HP PSC
Viewsonic 15" LCD Monitor
(All the above Hardwired)
+
uSoft Wireless K'board & Mouse

Being of advanced years(!) I'm not interested in downloading music etc. or Games.

It would seem I could replace all the above with all Wireless Laptop,Modem, & Printer.

Would someone be kind enough to advise me as to the practicality of this & let me know what other bits & bobs I would need to achieve a system which got rid of all the cables & freed up the currently dedicated work area.

An indication of the likely costs involved would also be most useful.

Thanks -(now you see what you get stuck with when inviting one & all to come on the Forum!)

Default Wireless Set Up

Wireless laptop £500-£xxxx
Wireless router £50

And as for the printer you can get a wireless print hub which would free the printer from all cables, they are about £100 but are a nightmare to setup and maintain working from my experience.

You could get a network printer that connects directly to the router by a cable, that would allow you to print wireless from the laptop, but would mean the printer and router need to be in the same place, new network printer £100+

Or connect directly with the laptop should you want to print then disconnect when you have finished, it's not the end of the world as the laptop is portable. (cheapest, simplest option)

Default Wireless Set Up

Thanks Dave.

I've seen a wireless printer,(BROTHER DCP-340 WIRELESS ALL IN ONE PRINTER SCANNER),. Could I not just use something like that as it's supposed to have a wireless link to a laptop or can't you link to two points, printer & router for the broadband?
Please excuse my ignorance as this is my first foray into a wireless set up.
I can understand it when bits of wire are joining things up but I'm a mech. bloke
rather than electronic altho' I worked in the electronic industry.

The printer has a built in wireless I guess, haven't seen them yet myself.

So yes, you should be able to connect to it directly using your wireless laptop.

You will need a wireless router also to get wireless Internet, this will transmit the Internet to your wireless laptop.

LOL, I know what you mean mate.

Sure we can advise on hardware, laptop wise somewhere like Dell is your best bet, get the best you can afford, if you have any questions on spec ask here.

As for the router have a look on www.ebuyer.com again if you have any question come back to us.

Printer wise I guess your sorted, post the make and model if you want me to check out if it can do what you want it to.

Thanks.

Your a pal. Just one final word,(promise!),.
You gave link to ebuyer. Am I right in thinking there's not much to choose between routers?

Default Wireless Set Up

There are lots.

Here is a link to the right category, then its a case of picking one based on brand (belkin and netgear are safe bets) and speed/range.

G+54
G+108
G+N Mimo
G+N1 Mimo

G+108 will be best bet and wont break the bank, MIMO is new technology and still has bugs plus a price tag and G+54 wont save you much on a G+108.

Have a look, have a read, I'm sure you will have some more questions.

I know I could go off and pick products for you, but what would you learn from that... :D

961 mate this is not a chop shop, where you have to cut and run.

Pull up an arm chair, take your time, consult the forum at your leisure.

Have a beer while doing so.

As the adverts for Malibu would have it; "It's seriously easy going".

Sorry can't put a Jamaican accent on. :o
