| I have a really weird problem with my laptop... It connects to my router and obtains an ip address both wirelessly and wired. Now, it obtains an ip address, and says that it's connected, but will not allow any data transfer at all. I can't ping a website, use the internet, connect to irc etc. Note: It will also connect and obtain an ip address wired directly to my modem and give me the same problem. I have other computers on the router which all work fine. So basically I have no idea what's wrong. I don't use firewalls. The last thing my computer did before this happened was during the night it updated with windows update and rebooted. The connection was fine when I went to bed, and in the morning it was like this. So... from what I can tell, it's not a problem with my internet connection, and it's not a problem with my wireless card or ethernet adapter... I guess it must be a problem with my filesystem? Could I have something corrupted in my registry that's causing this? Any help appreciated, thx. |

| Can you try pinging the router? It will probably be 192.168.1.1 or something along those lines. If you can ping the router, then you know that there is some sort of connection between them. Next thing to check would be that some sort of blocking rule hasn't accidentally been set up on the router for some reason. Have you tried rebooting the router / resetting it back to factory settings? It may just be handing out your computer a duff IP address or something. Have you tried giving your computer a static IP address, and see if it will connect? If you don't know how to do this ask. I doubt its anything to do with the registry... Also, have you got another network that you could see if you could connect to, ruling out any problems that might be residing on the suspect computer?

| Right, so its obviously something to do with the computer. You can try rebuilding the TCP/IP Stack: Rebuilding the TCP/IP Stack Click Start Select Run Copy and paste the following text into the Run box: Code: netsh int ip reset c:\tcpiprebuild.log

| I have had an idea: Go to Start - Run - Type in CMD Type in ipconfig /all See what it says for Default Gateway and DND Servers.

| This is a very bizarre problem. Everything looks fine in you IP settings. Can you transfer files between your suspect computer and other computers? Try going in to Device Manager and deleting all the Network Adapters. Reboot and XP should either automatically install them or download the latest drivers from the internet. See what happens then.

| Also, can you try pinging another computer on your network? Just open up Command Prompt as before and type in ping and then an IP address of another computer on your network. Then, try and ping your suspect computer from another computer in the same way. Then, try and ping www.google.com and see what happens. Lastly, open up command prompt on the suspect computer and type in tracert www.google.com It will try and find Google. When it finishes, or returns an error, right click and choose Select All and then press Enter. That will copy it all to the clipboard. Post that in your next reply. Then do exactly the same tracert on a computer that does connect to the internet.

| I'm off to bed in a second but if all the results of those pings / tracerts turn out to be negative you can try running LSP Fix. Download here: http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html Open the program and first of all make a backup of your registry by clicking ReG-Backup. Save the backup to your desktop or similar. Then run the actual tool by clicking Fix. Reboot. Test internet.
