Default Workstation Losing Internet Connection

I am not an IT guy but I've been stuck with trying to solve this problem. We have a windows 2003 server that runs our point of sale system. It is accesed via remote desktop by a workstation running windows xp. Everything works fine except that the workstation loses connection to the internet for about 10 minutes a couple of times an hour. But this only happens when trying to access the internet via the remote desktop connection, not actually on the local machine - the local machine can connect to the internet fine. The problem it creates is that we cannot run credit cards as the pos credit card system is on the server and has to be run via the remote desktop internet connection. Can anyone help?
