my dads advent 6001 laptop seems to be having trouble starting up.

you switch it on, the advent screen comes on, then it says 'window did not start successfully' and you've got 30 secs to choose
safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known good config
start windows normally

i have tried all of them numerous times, but after this page, the windows screen comes on like it normally would, then after a few seconds, it restarts and the whole cycle starts again

any ideas?

if we need a new laptop, can the HD in this one be connected to the new one so we don't loose any files?

thanks

checked the RAM

checked the internet for recovery console, found this:

Your Advent computer uses the latest recovery system that doesn't require any CDs or DVDs to restore your PC to it's original factory condition.
Restart your computer.
Press F10 repeatedly until the message "Starting System Recovery" is displayed.
The recovery will load and display a menu of options:

Non-destructive recovery

To access the recovery options below that erase all data from the computer, click the Advanced button.

System Recovery - No format
System Recovery - Quick format:

Select the Non-destructive recovery option and press Next.
You will be informed about System Restore in Windows®, click Yes.
The recovery will begin. Once this is complete click Restart.

tried the pressing of F10 repeatedly, but the only thing that comes up is the Boot Menu with:
2. IDE 0:
3. IDE 1
7. PCI LAN:
<Enter setup>

so no luck there
can't use the CD, don't know where it is

has this been resolved? Most likely this problem came from something that was changed just prior to the failure. Can you think of anything that may have changed? Installed updates? updated drivers? added new software? etc? etc?

Also, for future reference, when given these options-

"safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known good config
start windows normally"

always choose last known good configuration first. That will fix the problem alot of the time, but you only get one chance. Once the system boots again you're toast.
