Default Black folder icons

Hi I hope someone can help me. I have got black folder icons. I have managed to reset the main desktop icons to their original state but when I go int programmes or any sub folders a lot of them are black. I have tried to reset these and I have to choose another type of folder icon than the original. Some wont let me do it at all. I got Mcaffee and AVG as my two antivirus programmes and running on windows Vista. I do have Ares fileshare programme but have removed and reset the computer to no effect and also restored windows as far back as I can everything remains the same. I now have run out of ideas can anyone help Thanks
