Default Black screen on startup

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right section or not but here goes.. My wife did something last night and not sure what she actually done.. I start the computer and a screen comes up like normal (Intel Desktop Board, Intel Inside, Etc.).. After this screen goes ...

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right section or not but here goes.. My wife did something last night and not sure what she actually done.. I start the computer and a screen comes up like normal (Intel Desktop Board, Intel Inside, Etc.).. After this screen goes off thats it, nothing happens.. It seems to try to do something for a second but then stops.. No activity coming from my PC at all.. What can I do from here?? Thanks

Do you own a Windows XP CD, assuming you are running XP.

I do have XP.. But I have no idea where the disc is, I've moved like three times since getting this computer..

Can you boot in safe mode (Press F8 repeatedly after the BIOS screen)

If not you need a CD to rule out if you hard drive is dead or not.

I can get to the screen to select safe mode but with I highlight safe mode and hit enter nothing happens...

correction:
I select safe mode then it goes to select operating system. windows XP Professional
is highlighted, I press enter and nothing happens.

XP is corrupt.

You will need a CD to try and repair it, it may also then become clear that the hard drive has had it too.
