As I asked above are you running the latest directx?

If not I suggest you try that.

says it doesnt need to be installed because an up to date version is already installed

Two things you can try.

1# Uninstall all the Nvidia stuff, drivers, software, add-ons, the lot. Then reinstall it.

If that doesn't work...

2# Get your XP CD out and do a windows repair, that will sort any registry issues.
