Default blue screen problem

hey guys,
i was wondering if you could help me with a problem that i'm having with my PC as i know very little about these things.

Pretty much everyday my computer will suddenly crash and go into a blue screen. it will happen about two or more times a day and at completely random times. i send error reports but never receive anything that helps.
when it goes to blue screen the most common error message i get is: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - or something like that, i have no idea what it means.

i was told elsewhere that i should buy some more RAM. my computer at the moment is:
Intel Celeron dual processor 2.54ghz with 512mb ram and a 256 gfx card.

so i bought a gig of kingston pc3200 memory (which is definately the correct kind) and when i installed it, replacing my old stick, nothing happened.
well the computer turned on but would not go past the first screen that says foxconn, intel, etc.

so anyway, sorry about the long post, but i was wondering if any one here knows why my computer is crashing, why my computer wont work with the new memory (im using the old 512 atm) and also what i should do to try and fix this?

thanks for any help, adam.

512 mb should be plenty, i run on 256 (well this pc anyway) and it works fine. Your RAM should not be a problem.

IRQ is a driver on your computer, you should check to see what is installed on that driver and see if they are conflicting each other. (not all partsof a computer will work with all parts)

That should be the problem.

try going into
C:\\DRIVERS
(from My Computer) if no success there check the BIOS screen on start-up.

as for the new RAM the screen it stuck on is the BIOS.
The reason will either be that the RAM isnt compatible with some of your other hardware or your hardware with it or two bits of hardware dont work with that particular RAM present.

Otherwise it might simply be that it isnt recognised in the Boot order, so you need to change it.. I'm pretty sure this is done by pressing F8 on the BIOS but I've never had to do it.

Try F8 it wont do any harm.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL tends to be driver related, next time it happens look for a filename it will be along the something.sys, or update you sound & grfx drivers that usually fixes it. also grab memtest and run it just incase one of your memory modules isn't corrupted.

This forum is a tool.

Used correctly it will help.

Used incorrectly it won't.

There is a FAQ at the top of every page if you are unsure how to use this site.

Cheers,

Spider how old is your motherboard? How many memory slots does it have and does it support a Gig in one slot?
