I am a computer repair tech and i have noticed in the past week or so i have had several computer with the same problem. It comes in with a boot loop problem. When I try to run a windows repair it skips the option for repairing and goes straight to the partition screen. The partition shows up as "Unknown". It shows the drive size and then it shows up that it's 100% free space.

I put the hard drive in a working system as a secondary drive to try to access the data. I can see the drive in computer management and in My computer. Computer management shows the drive capacity and that it has 100% free space. My computer doesn't show anything for drive capacity or free space. The computer gets to the Windows XP Loading screen and just restarts so there is data on the drive.

If I try to open the drive from my computer it just freezes up My Computer and i have to end task it.

The Drives don't show up in a Linux live environment or anything simalar.

This can't just be bad hard drives because I have about 4 right now with the same problem and I just had 2 or 3 last week. let me know if you've had this problem and what you did to fix it. right now i'm basically jsut replacing drives.

Windows does the boot loop when windows files are corrupt and/or the file table is screwed.

If the repair option is not present that is because the CD you are using is a different version of windows to that on the hard drive, so it forces a fresh install.

The drives not showing properly on another machine could be that machine if all 4 drives do the same and you are putting them into the same donor machine. It could also be because the file table is screwed on the hard drives.

I would try the drive in another donor machine and see if they show, basically running a windows checkdisk on the drive normally fixes this error just fine without doing a windows repair, but the fault could be beyond that where a full re-partition, format and install is needed.
