Default BSOD and Startup Problems - Windows XP with Service Pack 3

So this might be the wrong place for this as I'm beginning to suspect that this is more of a hardware issue but other than that I'm clueless and maybe you guys can steer me in the right direction.

About three months ago I built my first system with the help of a friend and everything seemed to be working perfectly. The current system I'm running consists of the following:
- ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
- Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drives
- ASUS EN9800GTX+ DK/HTDI/512M GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
- Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400
- CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-8500C5D

My OS is Windows XP with Service Pack 3

Anyway as I said everything was running smoothly and perfectly until about a month and a half ago. I had fallen asleep without turning my computer off and I woke up and upon using it for about a minute I got the BSOD and the system restarted. I shrugged it off and restarted windows but within one minute I got another BSOD and continued to get one every time I restarted the system (Also these were all on screen for a split second, giving me no time to copy down the error message or anything). I finally shut down my computer for ten seconds before powering back on and that seemed to work. Over the next few weeks my computer continued to work well except that it would blue screen maybe 3 to 4 times a week. I finally decided to see if I could fix it by installing the windows 7 rc. I installed it and everything worked fine for about a week and a half when I decided to re-install XP to try and see if I would have the same unrelated wifi problems I was having with 7. Upon reinstalling XP the computer worked very well until the next day when I tried to start up and it gave me an error message saying the registry was corrupted and windows couldn't start. I then reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled XP again. Immediately after, I re-installed 7 and in a few hours i was greeted with the same start up problem. So I once again reinstalled XP to see if I could get some updated drivers for everything and before I could even check it gave me the BSOD and then wouldn't start up because of a corrupt registry file.

As I said this is probably not a problem with Windows alone so this might not belong here but I would greatly appreciate it if anybody could steer me in the right direction.

Your hard drive is most probably dead. I had a SIMULAR problem where every time I booted after a fresh install, it said that a system file is corrupt or missing. I replaced the hard drive and it worked fine.
This is my opinion as I learn from experiance
