Hi
I bought a HP compaq dc7100 second hand comp off ebay. It did not come with a restore cd, but there is an XP Product Key label stuck on the tower.
Is it possible to reinstall windows somehow with this product key? I don't wana lose the legit version of Windows from this computer for updates etc etc, i could use an "unofficial copy" but again i would rather keep it legit.
I s this possible?????????????

Sure, the key is what keeps it legit, as you have one there is no problem.

You will however need a CD that matches the version on the sticker.

Microsoft will probably send you one for a small fee or try ebay.

Downloading them is against forum rules as it is not legal.

Or simply borrow one from someone that has the same version - then use your key.

Do you mean installation disk or restore cd? Also aren't these cds locked into their own product keys? Please explain.

No, the CDs are the same, although they come in different versions. ie: Pro, Home, Pro with service pack 1, home with service pack 3 etc. the version must match your product key version.

Restore CDs are a whole different kettle of snakes and are basically Windows CDs messed around with by the manufacturer and will in most cases only work on specific makes/models as they have specific drivers built in for ease to new users.
