Default Can't Boot up or Install!!!

Well, this problem started a few days ago with my computer freezing up about 20min.(give or take a minute or 2) after booting up.I'm guessing its a virus. I tried fixxing this by reinstalling XPpro. but it kept freezing up so I tried installing XPhome. While trying to install XPhome it froze when it got to about 25 mins. left for install, and now I don't even have an OS on my computer. I have a couple questions:

(1) Which way would be better?
(a)Trying to create a boot scan disc to find and possibly get rid of the virus.
(b)Trying to create a disc that erases my hard and reconfigures it.

(2) Select a or b and try explaining how I go about doing it!?

Are you sure that is a virus, as that sounds to me like hardware problems, as a reformat/reinstal should sort everything.

I'm just guessing its a virus. If its a hardware issue like you said, I tried reinstalling my OS and it didnt help. What else could I do to fix it if its a hardware problem?
