im running XP SP2, and my network places will lock every second time i try to open it.
to open my network places, i have to go through the very long and incredibly annoying process of: open my network places, wait for computer to unlock, close it, ----> open my computer, click the my network places link, wait for computer to unlock again -----> open my network places. then the next time i want to open my network places, i have to go through the whole process again. |

Lots of Network issues applied to XP, but many were sorted out with SP3 ..... I'm not saying this will definitely cure your issue, but it's worth updating anyway
