I have seen this problem with others but mine is slightly different.
I am using windows vista too, one night I was doing an update and it had to restart, as it was switching off my battery ran out and turned the whole thing off. I turned it on and the message came up and said ; 'Checking File System on C: its a ntfs file....' but when it got past the check instead of the log in bit it had a thing with the same background but saying ' Configuring Updates; Stage 3 of 3 DO not shut down computer' which it had when the pc ran out of juice. It just doe sit again and again. I have no idea what to do. Anyone got any ideas??

Welcoem to the forums.

Do you have a Vista CD? If you boot off it (restart with the CD in drive) you can run the boot repair.

I don't think I do. Would I be able to make one?

Turn it on and leave it. The updates at restart seem to do nothing for ages then suddenly go to 100%.

No, did you buy the machine new? What make/model is it? Where did you buy it?

I would speak to HP and see if you can get some recovery discs from them, then run the repair. One you have them I can guide you through.
