My old 2.5" sata hdd failed in my hp dv2550 laptop. I replaced it, and stuck an xp pro install disk in my laptop. It goes thru the install motions, but when it come time to start the install it says there's no hard drive, please check for one, install it correctly.....etc

My question, shouldn't xp take care of detecting that drive? Is it not detecting because it's an unformatted hdd, straight out of box?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Have you tried reseating the hdd? Is the hard drive detected in the BIOS? If it isnt then you might have an issue with the sata controllers or the sata port.

Yeah, I've tried reseating and using another new Hard drive. I'm running Pheonix bios, and I can't seem to find any menu item that let's me configure the cmos to detect a new hdd. Anybody know how sata works?
