probably a dumb question but, I installed a fresh copy of xp home sp2. retail. on a new drive but, when I clicked on my computer programs shows up in black lettering but, windows shows up in blue? could this be because I formatted this drive in another pc which I removed it from and, the compression option box was maybe checked and, when booting from the new pc and installing windows it was compressed while being installed? when I realized this, I right clicked on c: drive in my computer and then unchecked the compression box for the drive. my question is, will this cause me any kind of problems with the OS. And if so, I'd like to know know now, so I can reinstall before I go any further not, that I'm crazy about the idea of reinstalling the OS . Would sure appreciate some help Thanks!

if you've run disk cleanup, it compresses unused files, maybe its compressed a file within the windows folder, hence the blue. whether a file in compressed in that way by windows or not doesn't stop it accessing it, but 'cos its being decompressed, it'll be slower. it wont do any harm to try it.

Hi, the pc is not running bad it's just kind of annoying. I may just decide to reinstall without formatting so I don't loose everything i've installed. and since the file compression box for C: drive is unchecked now windows won't go back on in compressed configuration I hope! Thanks!

reinstalling will cause you to loose all your programs, whether you format or not. depending on your method, you may be able to keep your files (eg music, photos) but when you install programs they also add files into the windows installation itself, into common files and system folders.

I just reinstalled using the upgrade option which leaves all the files intact. but, I still had to go into program files and decompress a lot of program files. one main reason I decided to reinstall was, I defragged the hard drive which had very little on it and then, analyzed again and it said you should defragment this volume? this happened three times. once I reinstalled, it was fine. must of been corrupted, or something. Thanks Again!
