Default compaq nx6110 corrupt harddrive?

A freind came to me and asked if i could fix his compaq nx6110 i could have it!
The problem is when turning it on it wont boot properly it will come up with "We apologize for the inconvenience , but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this." After that it will ask if i would like to boot in
Safe mood
Safe mood with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
and so on and wont go much futher then that ive tried reformating it tried, repairing it with operating system CD microsoft windows XP professional SP2 but know i think it could be the hard drive after taking it out and putting it in one of them harddrive cases
it said something like this hard drive is corrupted
Any help on how to fix this plz tell me
