The past few days my computer has been rebooting a minute or so after booting and displaying the desktop. After the reboot the system typically locks up during the pre windows boot process. After I do a hard reset it then boots with no problems - although I get a 'system has recovered from a serious error' message. Its done this 3 times in the last 4 days and has left files in the C:\WINDOWS\Minidump folder. These files mostly look like garbage when opened in notepad, but include some legible text such as:

*** STOP: 0x0000009C (0x00000004,0x80546DF0,0xB2000000,0x00070F0F)

*** Fatal System Error: 0x%08lx
(0x%p,0x%p,0x%p,0x%p)

Driver at fault: %s.

*** STOP: 0x%08lX (0x%p,0x%p,0x%p,0x%p)

Any help would be much appreciated.

EDIT: XP pro SP3, Athlon 64 3000+ @ 1.81 ghz, 2.5 gb, cpu core temp: 54 degrees, geforce 6600GT
AVG detected and cleaned a trojan yesterday.

Hold down Windows key and touch R, then type

sfc /scannow

and see if that fixes it.

You may need to start in safe mode. Hold down F8 during bootup.

Okay, I did that. It asked for the Windows CD just once near the start, but when I inserted it, it didn't recognise it, so I had to click cancel. After that it went through the rest of the scan without problems.

Update: It's still crashing and rebooting even after doing that scan.

I think the sfc probably worked if it didn't keep stopping.

Do you know how to do a repair re-install of windows? You install Windows over your existing copy, but preserve all your settings.

You need to boot from the CD. Opt at first to install windows rather than repair it (this first one just allows you to run a DOS console), and later you will get the option to repair the existing installation.
