Can someone please help?? I got back from class today and went to turn my laptop on. When I try to run a program it keeps saying "(whatever program) has encountered a problem and needs to close". It wont even run System Restore or any Windows programs for that matter. The only things I got to run were Firefox, AVG, the Steam client and that's it. I scanned for viruses but it didn't find anything. I could use some help.

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Follow the prompts to complete installation.

Once installed open HijackThis and click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
Please copy and paste the log in the next post.

Download ViewpointKiller

* Unzip the program and all of the contents of ViewpointKiller.zip to a location such as your desktop.
* Double click the ViewpointKiller icon to run ViewpointKiller.exe. Select the "File" menu, and select "Check to see if you have Viewpoint installed".
* If ViewpointKiller indicates that any of the Viewpoint variants are installed, select the proper "Kill" option in the File menu.

Follow the prompts and instructions very carefully, answering "Yes" or "No" depending on which option you are most comfortable with. The MsConfig instructions are very important, so be sure to read them carefully.

Note: When done with ViewpointKiller, simply right click and delete all files that were unzipped.

PC Tools Firewall is very good, but I and others have has problems with Spyware Doctor in it slows down computers.

I suggest uninstalling it and installing SUPERAntispyware Free Edition

Lets try cleaning up some temp files and dead registry keys.

CCleaner
If you do not have CCleaner please install it. Download CCleaner

• Once CCleaner is open use the default options.
• Click Analyze and it will show a log of what will be removed.
• Next click Run Cleaner to remove everything.
• Then on the upper left of CCleaner select the Registry tab.
• Click Scan For Issues.
• Then click Fix selected issues.
• It will prompt you to make a backup. I would suggest doing so.
• Exit the program and you are done.

If the problem continues let us know if there is an error number and type the entire message out.

Still having the same problem. The error signature for System Restore is

I have never encountered a problem like this before. :/

Press ctrl+alt+delete (all at once) to bring up Task Manager.

See if rstrui.exe is running. If so end the process and then try to launch System restore.

Do you have your Windows install disk? You may need it but then maybe not. Go to Start > Run > type sfc /scannow and press enter. Let the System File Checker scan the system for errors.

It's checking for errors now. I may just have to create a backup CD and reformat the whole thing. :/
