I have a dell 2400 desktop, I used to be able to load and run Windows Vista, My kids use this unit because the like to go on places like. Mybook, Myspace. I was having to redo the whole system about every 4-5 months. I would just put my Windows Vista in the drive and let it go, It would load with know problem. Now all of the sudden it will not read or boot the windows disk any longer. I have tried the same disk in other computers and it works just fine. I cant even get it to read the disk even after it's all booted up and running. But it will read a Windows XP Pro disk with out any problems, I will ever boot fine from a the XP disk that's on a DVD disk, Any Help???

XP is on CD, Vista is on DVD.

My guess is the read laser for DVD has gone bad, I believe there is one laser for CD and one for DVD.

Do other CD and DVDs work or not?

Many of those 2400's shipped with a DVD/CD player that was flawed. It was fixed with a firmware update. LOL i found out last year when I got one (free ) for my daughter. Everything was fine, then the DVD wouldn't work. Eventually it wasn't even recognized. I forget the DVD model, but they used it in most of the ones they built that year. I have looked this up for folks since then that I should have it memorized, but I don't. I also have been to stupid to bookmark the place to get the firmware update. It's a witch to find because it's 5 or 6 years old.

Try looking for a firmware update for your DVD player. I googled the part number on my daughter's player to find out what it was lol. If you can't find it let me know and I'll search for it again. I just don't have time right now.

Or......... send Newegg 20 bucks and just get a newer, better DVD player. I did that after I got the old one working. They had a firesale at fry's one day when I was in there and I got an LG for 10 or 12 bucks lol.
