Argh!

Okay, to start off with, I know nothing about computers!

I have a Samsung R510 laptop, I tried to open a word document earlier and for some reason the laptop just crashed. (never happened before, the laptop has only been used about 5 times, I've only had it for a week!)
I left it running for about 10 minutes, but when I came back, it was still unresponsive. I tried the usual, ctrl alt delete to bring up task manager to find out if it was a program that crashed, but nothing. In the end, I had to just hold down the power button to restart (bad I know, but i had no other option)

Now it wont load. It loads to the samsung screen, then screen goes black and says
"Boot from AHC I CD-ROM:
A disk read error occured
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

I've pressed ctrl alt del many times to restart, but I keep getting the same error.

I'm using windows vista home premium, some specs according to play.com -
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200 2 GHz
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200 / 2 GHz (Dual-Core)
Cache Memory: 1 MB - L2 Cache
RAM: 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM - 667 MHz (1 x 2 GB)
Hard Drive: 160 GB - 5400 rpm
The hard drive is actually two drives with 69gb on each

Sorry if i haven't included enough information, or not enough...as i said, my computer knowledge is very basic!

thanks in advance for any help

Sounds like the hard restart corrupted some windows files, hopefully it's just a case of repairing them.

Did it come with a Windows CD or recovery CD?

Yes it came with the windows recovery disc. Shall I run that?
It hardly has anything on it, so I'm not worried about losing any data.

The recovery disc may let you do a repair, it may even be a full Vista CD and then you can just fix any boot errors.

That said it may force you to do a full recovery, but it's sounds like you don't mind.

Give it a try.

I thought about doing that, but I was scared I was going to mess it up further :p (I usually end up making things worse!)
I've started it off, hopefully it'll work.

Thanks for your help and sorry if I'm being blonde and stupid :p

I'll let you know if it works

Thanks again,

Rachel

Arggh!!!
It didn't work. I can't remember the exact error, I'll try agan when I get home from work.

It doesn't seem to be recognising the hard drive (or both hard drives, since really it has two)
I even tried doing a full restore but even that didn't work :(

Grrr...

Ouch, sounds like the drive could have actually crashed then.

If it is a week old I would contact the place where you bought it.

I take it has a warranty?

Sounds like the initial problem it was trying to boot from cd and not from the hard drive. maybe the boot order got changed in BIOS. I'd check and make sure the system is set to boot from the Hard drive in BIOS.

I have to be honest with you, I have no idea what BIOS is or to check it.

I've just run the Startup repair tool using the windows disc that came with my laptop. It went through the first time, then said something like "clicking finish will restart your computer, if your computer starts normally, it has worked, if windows doesnt start, run this again" - something like that anyway,

It didn't work, so I ran the tool again and I've just got this error

Startrep.exe - Application Error
The exception Integer division by zero.
(0xc0000094) occurred in the application at location 0x0084cc2b.
Click OK to terminate the program.

And yes, it is under warranty, I was hoping to fix it myself, but it's not looking so good!
