Apple are mean and keep their OS to themselves, meaning they can sell computers at a premium.
But what if I bought an Apple Mac, partitioned the hard drive, could I buy and install vista or xp on he partition?? Thanks for your help, Ollie.

as far as i know they use different processor arciectures so it is impossible to run osx on a pc or win xp on a mac. however you can emulate a forign os within the computers native os but at the cost of allot of speed.

No. All Macs made in the last few years use Intel Core 2s. They are no different from any other computer.
