Try taking it to a restore point before this started happening.

Was is around the time of any windows updates?

That could be the culprit. All I could find is that it "might" be an error in Vista due to updates.

A cure I couldn't find other then going to a restore point before it started happening.

I have done some searching too but couldn't find too much.

I suggest you uninstall it and then reinstall it. That should sort it out.

To remove Windows Defender from Windows 2000 or Windows XP:

1.On the Start menu, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Defender.

2.Exit Windows Defender. (Click the arrow next to the help icon and point to Exit Windows Defender).

3.On the Start menu, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.

4.Click Windows Defender.

5.Click Remove, and then in the dialog box that follows, click Yes.

Then restart your computer.

Download the latest version and install from here.
