I recently was told to update my Vista enabled laptop which is fine. When I tried to do it it said that I had to install an update for Windows update (How ironic I thought) so I clicked "OK" and allowed the operation through UAC and waited for a while but it keeps saying that the install failed with the code 800B0100 and the Microsoft help system is still as useless as ever.
Any help would be good, I like keeping my laptop up to date! |

Go to Windows Update, manually, through the clicky link on your start/programs menu. Do NOT use firefox or any other browser. Follow the instructions there and forget about your auto update thing for a this. It's a hassle, I did 5 computers in a short period of time with this thing, but it WILL work itself out. Also, I would suggest you turn the UAC thingie OFF.

That didnt help much. It just says searching for updates then goes red and gives me some error code which is as much use as a cream slice. It even says I have not done an update search before. I tried going on the Windows Update website in IE but it said do it through the start menu.
How hard can it be to update the blasted thing!! |

I don't recommend turning UAC off, but that's just because I cannot gauge how capable the guy is of successfully working with PCs.

Hardware I can do, XP I can do, Vista just seems to make everything long and complicated. You can give me a guide if you like, I'm competent enough to follow some good instructions but I leave UAC turned on because it doesn't annoy me and it's meant to be safer

I'm not sure this is related but it's worked for me in the past. Add Windows Update to your Trusted Sites.

It already is..
Just tried to install Vista SP2 and I got the same error. I don't think I've tampered with something to break it though.. |
