Hi, I have Vista Basic and would to ask advice regarding this. I have Malwarebytes loaded and it is doing s great job, but Windows defender keeps blocking it every I boot up, also a Phillips MP3 player, is there a way to "unblock" this. I have read on help that is does not seem possible! Also the User Account Control UAC I am sure is there for a reason but having to accept every time you do an action is a pain, would you recommend in switching it off? My last Q is that this Machine is a HP and they are offering a FREE upgrade to Windows 7, BUT they charge 30 Euros handling, etc. Is this a good price and again I assume it is worth it? Any advice or suggestions welcomed. Thanks. Neil

| 1) Should be simple if you open up the program - but I'm not familiar as I don't use it. look for exceptions or rules or something similar 2) Fine to turn it off. Unless you have kids using the computer that you're ultra-protective about. Even hat only works if your account is passworded though. 3) Definitely. Bargain for W7 - it's a huge deal better than Vista and worth every penny. *cent*

Hi Thanks for the reply. If I was to get the upgrade to Win 7, I assume it would have to be a complete new install, having to do back up of the stuff I already have on here, etc? It would not be a simple task of inserting a DVD/CD and letting it do its own thing, with existing music, pistures, etc still on here? Sorry I am not a techy!! Any info that might be helpful concerning this process would be grateful. Thanks in advance. Neil

Believe it or not, it is as simple as you think. As long as you have enough room to store your pictures and stuff, select new install and install it where Vista is currently installed. You will get an "error" message saying that there is already a windows installation on the drive and if you continue, all your documents and program files are stored in a folder located at "C:\Windows.old". Run the installation then copy and paste your stuff from the Windows.old file into your new documents section, merging the folders. Job done, go eat cake =)

Hi Razer, do I have to create a new parition to store the stuff on first, then install new OS? I have loads of room to store the stuff. Or does it create and move ALL stuff to the new location >> C:\Windows.old. ?? And this location is for Vista ?? Is it C/Windows......?? Thanks again..

No, the Windows 7 install will do it automatically and store it. When the OS is installed, look in the C: drive and there will be a folder called "Windows.old" which has all your stuff in it. It moves the Program files folder (x86 and x64 if you're on 64 bit Vista) the "Users" folder with all your documents and a few other folders. This location works from Vista to Windows 7 It's located in the home drive of your computer. If you look in Vista, you get folders called "Windows" "Program Files" "Users" etc. In windows 7, after the installation, you have a folder called "Windows.old" If you have a partition big enough to store all your stuff then it's a far better idea to stick your documents on the partition instead of using the method I described
