Hi,
Even though i am logged on as an administrator i can't access my task manager. When i press Ctrl, Alt delete a window pops up offering me to lock my comp or shut down but it doesn't allow me to press the button for the task manager.
Does anyone know the answer to my problem? I'm running xp me sp3.

If you already have Malwarebytes be sure to update it before running the scan!

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)

Alternate MBAM download link

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

* Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

* Then click Finish
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Before evil ucks you into malware world, just do one thing.

Try, instead of CTRL+ALT+DEL - CTRL+SHIFT+ESC

Usually, that will bypass the annoying menu with locking changing password etc. and take you direct to Task Manager.

However if the problem is Task Manager is missing completely, this obviously will still not work.

Although it will definatly narrow down the problem.

There it is, my long missed TM!!! The CTRL+SHIFT+ESC let me access my task manager. Question is though, why this way and not the regular way? Any ideas?

No worries

That probably means its a registry fault, or something similar. The .exe is there, it's just not being allowed to operate from within the other screen.

Do you have CCleaner? If not it's available to download from File Hippo.

Try running the registry fix from within it, doesn't always work but it might do.

Other than that have you installed any hardware/software recently?

I had a fairly similar problem where I was presented with that screen on XP after I installed my netowrk adapter, every time I logged on.

That was a few items in the registry needed fixing, rtlgina2.dll was the main one, you could always search for her, and try deleting her, shouldn't do any harm, but it might help.
