Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice. I have a PC from mesh, its Intel Pentium D80 Dual Core, with ASUS P5b-TMX motherboard. I've had the PC for just over a year...

I've been having problems with Windows XP starting up, it stays on the Windows XP screen (with the blue bar at the bottom) for up to 10 minutes, then just resets and the process continues for sometimes up to an hour before it eventually loads. Some times take longer than others, doesn't seem to be consistent. Once loaded all is fine.

I reinstalled Windows using the recovery CD thinking this would fix the problem, after reinstalling I only installed a few bits of software, MSN etc, nothing weird or that I didn't have before....but its still happening.

I'm not sure how to go about analyzing the problem, I enabled boot logging and I have a log which shows 10 drivers did not load... also looked at Event Viewer and seems to have quite a few errors, mostly "disk" - does this mean the hard-drives worn out? to be honest, i'm a complete n00b and have nooooo idea what to do or where to start...drivers? hardware? I don't know!

Any advice offered (in relatively simple terms!) would be very much appreciated

Thanks

Post the logs here and I will have a look at them.

Very strange that reinstalling did not solve the problem.

Its strange, after re-installing Windows, it did not happen straight away, only after I had installed a few bits of software, but not much....

The reason that it is taking so long to load is that Windows is trying to start services that aren't working properly. It is trying them for a set time period, that could be up to 5 minutes before moving on.

I came across this thread on the internet.
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1152731205

Many of the drivers that did not load with this person are similar to yours.

Unfortunately this person never came up with a solution.

I think that it must be something that you installed after Windows installed that caused lots of problems.

First, try unplugging everything from your computer except for the monitor and power cable. Remove the mouse and keyboard. And any external hard drives, anything.

Try booting the computer up. See if the problem still exists.

Also, I would like you to run System File Checker. It will check if any Windows files are corrupt and replace them if necessary.

To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in: sfc /scannow

If you computer does not have good version of any corrupt files then you will need your XP disk to copy them off it.

In your next post could you also post some logs from the Event Viewer?

To do so:
  • Open Event Viewer (Start - Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer)
  • Click on Application
  • Then click Action - Export List
  • Save the log to your desktop as a Text (Tab Delimited) file.
  • Do the same thing for the System log
  • Copy and paste the logs into your next reply.
Post back with the results of these two tests and we can go from there. Unfortunately I think you may have to do a repair install again but we shall see.

Tried to post the log but it wasn't well-formatted and seemed a pain to read so probably easier if I just post a couple of screen shots of event viewer...

Application:

System:

I also used HD Tune and discovered 9 "red blocks"/ bad sectors........

Did you run the System File Checker? I take it it didn't find anything. I don't think that that is the problem though...

Those Disk Errors aren't good. It probably mean the drives giving up. I suggest you take the time to back up any important data from your computer now.

You can try running the Check Disk. It may be able to help somewhat.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

But if HD Tune found lots of bad sectors the chkdsk won't tell you much more.

Is the PC still under warranty? If so I suggest you get in contact with Mesh. If not, then you need to replace the Hard Drive.

Sorry that I cannot be of much more help.
