You can also see what programs load at startup..

Start - Run

Type msconfig

Click on Startup and see whats there and if you don't need it to automatically start then disable it.

If you're unsure what any of the programs are ask here or Google them first before disabling them.

You can try changing how long Vista will wait when trying to kill a process at shutdown.

1. Open regedit.exe
2. Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l]
3. Change the value of “WaitToKillServiceTimeout” to 5000

Make sure you have a System Restore Point set before you do this.

What it basically does is reduce the time it will wait before it will automatically kill processes that don't respond at first.

I think the default is 20,000 (20 seconds) so you can bring it down as far as you want but I suggest staying above 1,000.

How much RAM do you have, Vista ideally needs 2GB minimum.

Vista is always going to be slower than XP if used on the same computer, because it is inherently more complex and resource hungry.

Have you defragmented your HD recently?
