Hi Folks,

Uninstalled and removed a program that freed up about 1Gig, but there's some remnants lurking that wont delete because Windows 2000 Pro says "The source file may be in use."

One is a .exe file
Three are .dll files
And one is a daily log (that returns a "Sharing violation" when I try to delete)

There's nothing in Startup, with the unlikely exception of mobsync.exe, that would let these 'kick in' on bootup.

I've looked in the Management Console and ensured the entry there for it is disabled, so it cannot start. But still I get the "Access denied" message when trying to delete, even though they're not files belonging to Microsoft or Windows or Internet Explorer.

Even 'cCleaner' and 'Wise Registry Cleaner' can't delete them.

Any ideas my friends?

Thanks SW,

Did that and it deleted the offending items.

But I can't get rid of the entry in the Services Management Console that the original program had created. I've tried running the two registry cleaners again, to no avail.

Every time I bootup there's a new System Log error 7000 LiveUpdate (the name of the unwanted and deleted process) saying it failed to start as it can't find the path (that I've deleted and don't want).

I've told the Console to disable the process and changed the user status to Guest, but I'd rather get rid of the process and any related files (that I can't find and don't know exist).

Any ideas how to get this sorted my friend?

Ta much.

Sorry about this guys, I was too late to edit my last Post.

I've since found the Norton Removal Tool from their site here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...pkb=sharedtech

which is used only if the uninstall process isn't sufficient AND the product was originally obtained via your ISP.

There are other Tools/instructions if you purchased the product, etc.

I've yet to install the Tool, but please accept my humble apologies for any time you've wasted. I'll Post again to report whether the Tool worked.

You should have mentioned it was Norton mate.

We would have pointed you to the tool straight away.

Thanks EF - ran the Norton Removal Tool and rebooted with no LiveUpdate in the MSC and no error in the Event Viewer logs - wooohoooooo

I should've mentioned it was a Norton thing, but my learned paranoia about computer security issues in a public forum outweighed my need to get a quick fix. And hey, I found a great Unlocker - so many thanks, and apologies for not being up front to begin with.

Glad you got it worked out.

A lot of well known products can be like gum on your shoe when it comes to removal. Especially Norton.

That said they also have specific methods for removal.

Don't worry about mentioning product names. If they are legal we have no problems with it.

Cheers!
