| It depends what OS, but you will need to boot with the Installation Disk for your OS or an M$ or third party rescue disk.

If all you want to do is format the drive, this will take place when you install an OS, so no need to format it seperately

When you install a new OS, it will automatically format your Hard Drive, there is no need to pre-format it. You simply boot up with the Installation Disk, press any key to boot from CD and setup starts.

thanks the reason why i wanted to format without putting a disk in was because the previeous os was stopping the disk drive working

When you boot from the OS Installation Disk, any exixting OS will not be running, so this will not be an issue.
