Default How do you synchronize two folders over your network?

I have tried Microsoft's SyncToy for some time, but I have noticed that it keeps failing to fully synchronize a folder on my HDD with that on another system. This is quite a killer fault for an application you might be using to backup valuable data.

I have given Heatsoft ADCS a try, but it suffers from the same faults. Several runs are needed to sync two folders and even then how can you be sure it is totally mirrored? Each time it is run some files fail to synchronize, even though they are not obviously open.

So, is this a failing of Microsoft networking? Years ago on a Uni network with shared folders we used to notice files fading in and out of existence for no reason!

I use SyncToy to keep my laptop in sync, and that seems to work quite well, but the EeePC only has a 20GB hard drive.

What operating system? Have you tried Acronis it's not free...but definitely one of the best.

Interesting! I am not syncing more than that at a time.

I wonder whether it depends on the depth of nesting of files and total file name length? I just get totally unpredictable results syncing 22Gb of music files in about 2600 files and 660 folders. Some files, it says they copied OK but they are there on the copy list again at next sync!

This is XP. I haven't tried Acronis but have been trying Heatsoft ADCS and that misses hundreds of files on a mirror op. Synctoy also makes lots of errors.

Then you may want to take a look at Acronis...

I am giving Allway Sync a go at present. It at least explains why it is not copying files, ie, open in another process or can't copy a file with a copyright symbol in its name, etc!
