Default how to transfer files from dead comp to new comp

The power supply on my old XP computer died and I bought a new Vista computer. I was wondering how to transfer my personal files from the old hard drive to my new PC. If I install the old hdd w/ the XP OS in the new comp will that work? I have access to another XP PC if that is easier. Any help would be appreciated.

You would plug your old drive in as a slave on the new machine.
