Default HP Pavilion Corrupted Recovery Partition -CDs Obtainable?

I've got a problem following an attempted system recovery on my HP Pavilion 410, which is about 7 years old (running XP home). It appears that the recovery data (on a partition on the Hard Drive) is corrupted. Recovery CDs are no longer available form HP or from the 3rd party company recommended on the HP website. Can I get them anywhere? If not, is there any possible substitute? I have recovery CDs for an HP laptop of similar age and spec (a bit newer) -would it be worth trying to use them or would I make the problem worse?

The machine won't work at all -I get the Windows screen, then the one saying 'windows didn't start right last time', which then sends me round in circles whichever options I take.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

An alternative would be to buy XP (or Vista for that matter). Will cost you but it is an investment of sorts. Recovery CDs tend to be matched to particular models/makes.
