i recently got hold of an old ibm thinkpad 570 excellent laptop btw
and i had to upgrade the os as win 98 was to old as i needed a bios update for xp and specs are a bit to slow i went for 2000 sp 4
as min specs are supprisingly low
i have had this os on for 4 months running on the internet playing games doing work \, everything i ve done with xp and vista
and it still runs as well as the day i install it boots quick no virus ad ware or malware
i mean the computer will probably blow up now ihave said this but still i thought i would share my thoughts

Yeah, 2000 is an excellent choice for machines running lower specs.

95/98/Me were all pretty bad.

XP and Vista/7 need good specs so it's the logical choice.

2000 is probably the most stable windows O/S ever! i do sound and lighting for shows and productions n stuff. always use a pc on windows 2000, usually a clean install so theres no stuff on it to screw it up. last one i had was running multiple .aiff files at once, never faltered once. shame a lot of software isnt made for 2000 anymore

but yeah as u said, 2000 will run on just about anything, and its really lightweight.
had it running a P4 1.8GHz with nearly a 1gb of ram, MAN that shifted!

Xp seems to be the best choice as is compatible with most hardware and is relatively usable
