I installed sp1 on vista. when i go to shutdown it configures the updates like normal. it says it failed and is reverting back the changes. i tried it like 10 times. what's up?

You could try deleting it and reinstalling it
Start, Control Panel, Programs and Features, then click on view in installed updates and delete the service pack
