Hi

I am trying to network my printer so my son can print off his school homework from his PC in his bedroom. This printer is connected to my PC via USB; its an HP series 3600. Both PC's are networked via a speedtouch 585 wireless router; the latter also being attached to my PC. Both PC's are in seperate rooms, about 10 ft apart ! I have tried to locate the printer on my sons PC using the network wizard and using the 'add printer' facility. However, it didnt seem to find anything on the network then when it did, it showed the printer icon with a green tick and so i used this as the default printer. I have also told it to 'share' by doing to the share and discovery box and also removing the password restriction too. Both PC's are Windows Visa; my sons is the basic version, mine is premium. I tried to print but printer next door doesnt seem to come on or do anything though the PC from where I am sending the print command doesnt say that there is no printer connected etc. Can't think what else to do and any suggestions would be gratefully received. I have posted this elsewhere on this forum and was advised to try here.

if you go onto control panel - printers and find the printer you want to share, right click on it then click properties, or if its vista then Share should be on that right click menu... then you need to give it a name. Now if you go onto the other computer - go into My Network Places , click on the computer where the printer is and that should be it, if not then you must not have a fully functional network.

Hi

I went back to my sons PC and uninstalled the printer listed in his network, then re-added it just to make sure ! It found the printer but says its offline, though it has a faint green tick showing in the background. I tried printing a test page but nothing happened (hardly suprising I guess). If the problem is with the network, what do I need to check ?; I have looked on the routers home web page, which gives details of all the devices connected etc. but it doesnt say much about printers etc.

thanks

you also may have to enable print sharing in Network And Sharing Center in Vista
