Default Internet Connecting failure

My home laptop has stopped connecting to the internet. Email still works, Kasperski Anti-virus updates every day but neither Firefox (my normal browser) and Internet explorer are unable to connect to the internet - 'site not found' or its equivilent message appears.

My wife accepted a Windows update (she thinks!) while I was away and that may have caused the problem.

I have tried switching off the antivirus/firewall to no effect. I have tried wireless and cable connection but as the other software keeps working I don't think connection is the problem and it must be somesort of software problem/confliction. BT Connect, my ISP, can't find the problem so any help or ideas would be gratefully received.

Thanks Philthomas but has had no effect.

MikeL have double checked firewall - no joy. Not sure what you mean by system restore. Sorry but I am a user who can follow instructions! Any chance of some instructions?

System Restore is a feature in XP, which let's you restore your system to a previous date.
If you choose a date, prior to this problem occurring, it may resolve your problem.

To use it :

1. Click Start.
2. Go to All Programs.
3. Go to Accessories.
4. Got to System Tools.
5. Click System Restore.
6. Follow the instructions on the wizard, choosing an appropriate date.

Thanks for that. I reset as far back as I was allowed (11Nov) and no joy I'm afraid.
I have run the connection diagnostic in IE and the system finds no fault. in fact the message says
HTTP,HTTPS,FTP connectivity
info HTTP: Succesful connected to www.microsoft.com
info FTP (Passive): Succesfully connected to ftp.microsoft.com
info HTTPS: Succesfully connected to www.microsoft.com

But when I try any web page still no joy.
Don't know if that helps.

There are a number of things you can try here, but if it's happening in FF as well ..... that sounds a bit more puzzling and may be a corruption in XP itself.

Thanks again Phil. Still not working. Could there be a problem with the cable and wireless showing connected at the same time? It didn't matter in the past so i did not pay any attention to the two icons. Is there a way of checking if the IE/FF are going to the right connection port?
