Default Loading Windows XP

Hi, can anyone please help. My friend had couple of issues with her PC so she went into accessories and restored it to an earlier date. Don't know if this worked properly though as since then it will not work. It starts normally and goes to the windows loading screen with the blue line going across the screen. After this though you just get the screen with the small windows logo on it and nothing else and that's as far as you can get. I have tried going though the Bios and starting from there but the same thing happens. It is a compaq pc so it comes with restore discs. The problem is that she hasn't saved any data to disc so doesn't want to do a complete restore if she can help it. Hope someone is able to give me some ideas to help her. Thanks

You really need an XP Installation CD .... Restore disks are not ideal.

Having said that, have a look at the options on the Restore Disk .... there may be a non destructive restore, which leaves the data intact.

Failing that, if the data is crucial, whip the HDD out and slave it to another PC, to get the data off, then put it back and use the Restore disk.

Hi philthomas, I haven't tried putting in the restore disc yet to check out the options as I thought it may delete everything on it for her. I did mention to her about slaving it to another pc, but I will look at the restore disc first to see what's on it. Told her about saving photos and other files onto disc a while ago but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears lol. Thanks for the help.
