It's an Acer laptop.

The restore is built in, but seems that by using it, Windows will be re-installed, and the data will be lost.

Just seen what you've written and it does appear so.

Got an XP CD! However, am getting a message of the version of Windows on the CD is older than the Windows version on the computer and won't proceed.

Right, the XP CD must match the version on the laptop.

If your PC came with SP2 you need Home or Pro inc SP2.

If you added SP2 after buying then you need just Home or Pro.

Then you must boot from the CD.

Okay, that makes sense.

It came with SP2, which must mean the current CD doesn't have it on.

Thanks for your help so far, am sure I'll be back :!:

Hiya

Managed to get the missing file on CD and booted the system up from it. Seems to have done the trick.

Have also changed from AVG to Avast. Do you think it will stop any trojans from getting through? There's anti-spyware on my computer, which found the trojan, but had let it get through anyway.

Need to do a back up as well, as haven't done one and the problem made me realise :!:

Many thanks

Saz,

Glad you got it all sorted.

As for Avast In my opinion its much better, its what I use for myself and my customers.

On another note regarding letting the virus through to your system, you need to remember these anti virus programs are just really removal tools. They do not guarantee protection, the user has to be vigilant.

Dave.

Hi dave. I have the same problem with the missing brouseui.dll file. Fortunatly I have the original rescue disc that came with the laptop. How do I get windows XP to repair instead of completely re-installing itself. Obviously I dont want to lose the various flies on the laptop.

Would be very grateful for a little help.

Boot from the XP CD, skip the first repair option then select the second.

Trying to repair xp pro with the cd without losing an information on my brother's computer system....he got auto update UPS worldship 9. It mess his system up. We almost had it repaired. When rebooting up came an error missing browseui.dll file and come to a blank desktop. We are at the Recovery window using chkdsk /r looking for any bad sectors. He was trying to backup to the second harddrive (which are scsi drives) and cannot get past 3 percent error 45. Chkdsk did and repaired some errors. We were shutting off restore point and rebooting when the error came up. You said use the second option. We use the R option and keeps coming to cmd window. I need to fix with a donation for sure thru paypal or what ever means necessary.
