Strange...

You posted this question on another forum early yesterday. You got an excellent answer to use System File Checker a short while later. Then you come and post the same thing here.

Here was your other post http://www.techsupportforum.com/micr...ease-help.html

You may be able to get around the problem without a disk because many computers that come preinstalled with XP will have the XP disk image burnt to the HD.

Here are some instructions

Quote:
There are circumstances where you may have a legal installation of Windows XP without an installation CD. This can cause some panic when you're later instructed to make sure you have the CD before installing some other software or hardware. If you're legal chances are you're okay though.
The scenario that seems most common is a manufacturer that pre-installs Windows XP for you and then does not give you a CD to go with it. I think this is a bad practice but I understand that it may save the manufacturer and ultimately you a little bit of money.
Hopefully what that manufacturer has done is copy the Windows XP CD-ROM image to your hard disk. Hard disks are so big these days that doing so takes up very little room and has some advantages I'll talk about in a second.
To find out if the CD-ROM image is on your machine, search for a folder named I386. There may be several but the one we care about will contain close to 7,000 files, two of which will be winnt.exe and winnt32.exe. The I386 directory is typically one of the top-level directories on the distribution CD-ROM but most importantly it is the directory that contains the distributed copy of Windows XP. Winnt.exe and winnt32.exe are the DOS and protected mode setup programs, respectively. (You'd only need those if you were planning to re-install Windows XP from scratch - I use them here as an easy way to indentify that we have the right directory.)
So now that you know you have the CD-ROM image, what if some later installation asks for the CD-ROM?
Not to worry, it's actually pretty simple. Typically the "Insert CD" message has only an OK and Cancel button. Press OK, allowing it to fail. The next dialog will typically ask you to provide the location of the CD-ROM; just type in the full path of the I386 directory you discovered above.
That's it. But it gets better.
Windows remembers. Now that you've told Windows where your installation CD image is it'll remember that. The next time you're in a situation that might require your installation CD Windows will look there first; if it finds what it needs then it won't bother to ask you for it.
Personally I find that pretty handy - so much so that even though I have my Windows CD I'll also copy it to my hard disk and point Windows to that copy the first time it asks. Then I don't have to think about it or insert the CD again. And this technique works for many other CD-ROM based products including Microsoft Office.

TBH, if System File Checker couldn't help it is probably easiest just to do a clean reinstall. I expect it might be a virus related problem anyway.

Default Missing "SearchSetting.msi" pelase help!!

I got the same problem, and it was not possible to solve it by reinstalling the Windows XP SP2 on my PC.
It seams that problem become when I downloaded, some days before a MP3 applications from the Web. That’s why I think is a kind of adware.

The problem, as is said by other members, is that when I tried to run either the Internet Explorer or the Windows Explorer, the PC runs the popup of the Windows installer and then another popup appears with the name of “searchsettings”. It was driving me crazy.

But when I looked at the directories on my PC with that name, this is what I found:
Under the path: C:\Archivos de programa\Search Settings there where some files and I folder containing the folder kb125 and a couple of files on it. On that path I found the file SearchSettings.exe and the legend: Search Settings Application Vendio Services Inc.

You can see over there the Company that appears “behind” the running process.

This is how I solve the problem (the administrator might verify and advice all of us if this is right. Actually, I don´t know, but it works to me)

1. I run “regedit” on the run application of the XP.
2. ]I make a backup of the registry because I planned to erase some files of it. (this is very dangerous because you can make your PC to crush)
3. I looked into the registry for this chain E312764E-7706-43F1-8DAB-FCDD2B1E416D and found it on the following three registries and deleted them. Note that the following three registries are not the only ones that contain the same chain:

A. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ SearchSettings.BHO.1\CLSID
B. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ SearchSettings.BHO\CLSID
Erased also the registry (o value) that is under the previous path and which name is CurVer,
C.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cu rrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects{E312764E-7706-43F1-8DAB-FCDD2B1E416D}

4. Then I went to the folder where I have the searchSettings file that was under the path:
5. “C:\Archivos de programa\Search Settings” and erase all the files (Because I had problem deleting “SearchSettings”, I just changed the name in case some registry tried to find it.
6. Shutdown my PC and started Over

And it works!!

Default Missing "SearchSetting.msi" pelase help!!

Lets look at a HJT log.

Download and rename HijackThis (HJT)
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
  • Close HijackThis and rename it.
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
  • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename.
  • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter.
  • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
  • From the desktop open Hijackthis.
  • If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
  • Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
  • Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Although we have renamed Hijackthis to sniper, we will still refer to it as Hijackthis or HJT.

Default Missing "SearchSetting.msi" pelase help!!

Uninstall one of the security suites (Norton/Symantec or McAfee) and see if that helps any. Running two antivirus and firewalls is never a good idea.

Neither in my opinion. Is either one paid for?

Would you mind going with a free firewall and antivirus?
