I have had to resort to doing a full recovery from a recovery partition (SONY VAIO DESKTOP) , due to a blue screen error encountered when Windows is starting up.
Part of the recovery process , however , requires Windows to start normally - it can't do this as it hits the blue screen mentioned above - so a bit of a chicken and egg situation here !! Can 'F8' into Safe Mode BUT can't get past message saying that Recovery process can't continue in Safe Mode Is there a way to rollback the Recovery process so that at least I can get back in via Safe Mode again ? |

You cannot roll back. If the recovery partition system doesn't work, you likely have a hardware fault, so best advice would be to fix that.

Thanks for your reply.
Do you think that a fresh install of Vista would overcome the blue screen or not ? It came pre-installed but would consider purchasing a disc if likely to fix problem. |

Also if it is a hardware fault , how can I determine what if it if I can't get into Windows ??

The recovery you have does that already. It is Vista, just adapted by Sony. So, no.

By diagnosing the symptoms, swapping hardware, trial and error. Windows tells you very little in the way of what is wrong in most cases anyway.

So , apart from somehow identifying and rectifying the hardware fault , is there anyway I could get in via the Safe Mode ?
I'm thinking of maybe using one of those RepairVista discs that are advertised ? If I could get into Safe Mode with Networking I could try and download a potential fix which has appeared online this morning - too bad it wasn't there yesterday before I started the recovery process !! |

All those CDs do is allow you to boot into a Linux environment, to perform tasks on your OS or backup data. The thing is you did a recovery, you reset everything to factory defaults, so it is pretty useless. What is the error on the blue screen? It sounds to me the hard drive has gone bad as that would explain the boot problems and now the recovery problems. But it could be numerous things. As it is a desktop I would open the case up. Clean all the crap and dust out and try the recovery again. Failing that it is time to remove/swap hardware and trail and error.

The blue screen refers to a nvlddmkm.sys error.
If you google "nvlddmkm.sys" you will see many references to the problem - some think it is hardware related (e.g. faulty graphics card/memory) , others that is a software error ( e.g. corrupted drivers). There is also a link to the 'fix' that I mentioned in an earlier post. On the VAIO splash screen there is a mosaic pattern obscuring the logo , on the Windows Loading screen this pattern is replaced by fuzzy vertical bars before the blue screen arrives to bring proceedings to a halt. I appreciate your comments about swopping components in and out to see if the problem is rectified , but I don't have the necessary confidence to do it myself. I believe the problem is unique to Vista so as a last resort may have to consider installing XP ( I have a disc ) as a last resort. |

It's an Nvidia driver error. The thing is, if the recovery resets everything and obviously the machine worked from the factory, then how can it be software as it should work just the same as then if it was, that's what I'm thinking. When you did the recovery, did it give you two options? Did you do the full/destructive option?
