It was the full/destructive option.

That was option 3
Option 1 was the recommened one which was some basic tidy-up , if I remember rightly.
Can't remember what option 2 was but I remember that Option 3 was the full monty that you refer to.

The option 3 had 3 stages to it , the second of which necessated a system restart which ended up at the blue screen.

If it is a driver error would it possible to download the required ones onto a CD and somehow get the system to boot from that CD and install them ??? (The phrase 'clutching at straws' is coming into my head !!).

The recovery is built in, you cannot swap drivers.

What is bizarre is that those same drivers worked just before it left the factory, so why don't they work now.

It's difficult to say what is wrong and what route to take, swapping the GFX card for another model/brand is a no as again the drivers built into the recovery will be wrong.

Getting the same GFX card might work, but it doesnt sound like a hardware fault to me so that may be a waste of money.

Buying Vista (Home premium is the one you want) will bypass any kind of forced driver install so should fix you up nicely.

Did I misunderstand an earlier reply of yours , when I thought you said that it wouldn't be worth buying a new copy of Vista beacuse it would only try and do what the restore is currently trying to i.e. re-install vista , and would almost certainly also fall over at the blue screen ?

As this appears to be a driver fault and the Sony recovery is forcing it's own set of drivers that do not work and Vista will allow selection I would now say buying Vista will suit your needs.

What driver selection are you presented with and what should / shouldn't be selected ??

Thanks for all your advice.

With Vista it is still auto until you get into Windows, but it will not force one driver, which the Sony recovery is pre-set to do.

At the end of the day that may not fix it, but PC repair is trial and error or educated guess work and this is probably the best place to start.

Is there any way of obtaining a free/cheap trial version of Vista to see if this will cure the problem , before I shell out £130+ on the real thing ??

I used PC World as a guide price (guide only I assure you !!) for "Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1" and their web price is £133 (product code 390408) !!!

Is the item in your link and the PC world item , the same product - surely it can't be ??
