You burn it as an image, that's why it's not working. Try using Imgburn or CDBurnerXP.

Thank ya Carbon. I got it to work. It's now in the process of wiping. In the tutorial it mentions making a win98 boot disc. How do i do that since the computer has no floppy? I assume I can do it via CD/DVD. Or do i just put in the XP disc and reinstall from there?

Should reinstall fine from the XP disc.

OK, HD clean. I put in the XP disc and I get a looping message that says: Intel boot version blah blah Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F exiting intel boot mode OS not found.

How do i get it to boot from the CD so I can install XP? Thanx

It doesn't sound as though it is recognising your XP Disk as a boot disk ..... if you are certain that your bios settings are correct (i.e. first boot drive = CD), then the XP Disk sounds faulty.

Is it a genuine Microsoft Installation Disk ? ... i.e. not a Manufacturers Recovery Disk ?

I believe its the one that came with the laptop. It's 2 discs, one with the utilities and the other with the OS. Both discs have Microsoft holograms on them. or better put, the whole disc is a funky hologram. As far as booting from the CD first, Im assuming it does since I booted from it to nuke the HD. I push f-10 after turning on the computer and tell it to boot from the CD.

Well, I've tried numorous times and cant get it to boot. I'll get the same error 2 or 3 times and then it just stays on that failure screen. Any suggestions?

Try removing the CMOS battery and placing it back in, or moving the jumper cap if you know where it is/have the manual.

Then try reformatting and installing again.
