I am having a new desktop built since my laptop is causing so much problems these days. I am being asked if I want W7 or XP installed and I haven't got a clue, out here where I have come across few people running W7, some say that W7 is as slow as the dreaded Vista (which I removed from the laptop to replace with XP). Cost is not an issue since both are the same to have installed, would very much appreciate some comment/advice. I don't use for design or gaming just normal surfing, downloading video etc.

Vista isn't slow, 7 isn't slow, and XP is a 8 year old operating system. There's no reason not to run 7.

Well, if that's your definition of 'slow', then it might be true, but considering the amount of beneficial services over XP, there's a reason it takes longer. The hard drive is going to be the major 'slow' part for most systems anyway, and of course an 8 year old OS is going to load much better on an older hard drive than a newer OS.

If waiting about 10-20 seconds longer for the OS to start at maximum is the overriding concern, then 7 isn't going to change anything for you. If you want the features that Vista and 7 provide, like better search & indexing, better Explorer navigation, zero config, improved interface, Homegroups, etc etc that's the price you pay (or you could just get a new hard drive or SSD).

I'm in favour of Windows 7.

It has the performance of XP with the features of Vista, there is no reason not to get it.

7, easy choice. It's modern and useful. XP is showing its age now and is becoming less worthy by the day.

Windows XP has been a proven performer for many years. It is reliable and fast. What else do you need?

Windows 7 is bloatware. It is modified Vista.

I'm sorry but Windows 7 trounces XP. XP is old and rusty now. Windows 7 has better memory management, better power management, more features, more user friendly, faster and is far better than Vista will ever be.

It's better than XP, easily. Why bog down a new system with an 8 year old operating system?
