A number of commenters on my column on Windows 7 expressed dismay that Microsoft does not plan to provide an upgrade path from XP. I want to clarify just what that means, since I seem to have caused a bit of confusion.

It does not mean that Microsoft won’t offer upgrade pricing. The company has not yet said anything about Windows 7 pricing, but I expect that anyone moving from either XP or Vista will be eligible for upgrade pricing, that is, a substantial discount from the full retail charge.

What it does mean is that XP users will not be able to to install Win 7 as an upgrade that will leave all of your programs in place. Instead, you will have to back up your data and settings, do a clean installation of win 7, then reload your apps and restore your data.I expect there will be some sort of migration tool to make this somewhat easier.
Sounds like MS is going to push for everyone to completely abandon XP ASAP.

I think in the next few years anyone still clinging to XP are going to be forced to upgrade, or be like the Win98 users and have no support and find more and more programs that won't work.

I'm eating my hat as we speak. When I first got Vista for my desktop everywhere said it couldn't be done, maybe they changed it. Dunno, I had to fresh install.

I can appreciate MS doing this, but it still annoys me. I LIKE XP - it's stable, easy to use, has some nice features (and yes, it had some cracking vulnerabilities...) but not to offer an upgrade unless you re-install everything - jeez....

I'm downloading Win 7 beta so we'll see how it stacks up. Must admit that Vista didn't appeal to me enough - so I was lazy and stayed with XP.

i dont get why people slag vista off so much, i think its better then xp, and certainly after using it for around 5 months, it hasnt slowed down, or had any problems, ive got xp downstairs, on a p4 3ghz, and that at the moment is slow as a snail, and then that was reinstalled 2 months ago, vista for me has kept its speed and is certainly a much better OS in my opinon, it had its bad starts, but so did xp, people just dont like the new layout thats all, and as soon as 7 comes out, people will say the same things that they did about vista, so will people stop slagging vista off so much, and move on, and maybe actually try vista before slagging it off, as most people do.

too right xp should be abadoned, if other people have moved onto vista, why cant the people on xp still do this? vista has some troubles about running older programs, but so the 360 has trouble playing some of the origanal xbox games, the ps3 has the same sort of issues, these things just happen with change.

lol anyway rant over.

i also realise i have ranted when i shouldnt have, but i get so angery when people just moan, and i obviously read wrong the first time lol

BTW yes depending on what license you have got, you can upgrade xp to vista,

well word has it that windows 7 will be a loved OS like windows xp ..from all the beta testers and my self think everyone on xp will have no excuse not to upgrade to windows 7 (unless you cant run it of curse) saying that me and many others think it runs better than xp!! ok so its not far off vista but they have pulled there finger out on windows 7 and some very nice add ons in there too one tool witch wil help this forum is a tool that will snap shot the screen on a problem a user has and can send the file to a advanced user that can see exacly what the problem is . insted of trying to tell you whats going on i just attache the file and you have a look .could see the forum change in a big way if windows 7 replaces all xp & vista users me however will stick with vista for at least a year as £200 for my vista is quite expensive if i was to go to windows 7 now

also yes you could upgrade xp with vista when it first came out it told you what programs wont work too when upgrading ( i did that) fresh install is better thought
