can anybody help? my computer came pre installed with windows xp so i don't have the operating system disc. i am unable to start my computer because it says <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. file is missing or corrupt please reinstall. Would i be able to buy one off the internet or would i need the original disc? Any information would be greatly received as i am a computer novice. thanks.

did you get the computer new? did you get any cds labelled 'restore disk'? the o/s is basically on these disks.

If you buy a disk, go for an OEM as they are cheaper. Just make sure you buy the same version, ie, if you have XP Pro buy XP Pro. Try eBay.

And no, you don't have to have the "correct" disk. Manufacturers tend to put their own drivers on disks but these are also generally available too online. However, buying one with the latest service pack (SP2 for XP) is advisable. Borrow one if you can, look for someone with a holographic disk with the XP logo on, not just a "system restore" disk as that will wipe your hard disk and start again.

What you will need though is that all-important code on the sticker on your PC, as without it XP/Vista will not work. (If you reinstall.)

thanks for the help guys. yes i bought my computer new but i can't find the box or any of the discs it came with. mike could you explain what an oem is please mate i'm not familiar with pc talk i only really use it for football manager.there is a sticker on the back with the model number etc on

Does anybody know how much this disc is going to cost please? I probably shouldn't say this but you are right we do not discuss this here.

Original equipment manufacturer, or OEM
OEM is the company that originally manufactured the product.


Call whoever made the computer. Dell, HP or whoever. Have your serial number. They can usually send a copy for less then trying to buy a new one.
