Hello, recently I had installed Windows XP Pro on my Desktop, when I went to install the updates needed. My key was told as non-genuine!? I was using the same serial key as before? Now since I reinstalled it, its no longer genuine!? Please help! I had actually got a computer containing Windows XP Professional, with a burnt Windows XP disc with a serial, the computer allready had the operating system installed onto it. What should I do!?

Contact the manufacturer?

I assumed your computer had a OEM product key on the side and you just reinstalled XP from a burnt copy and used a valid license. So you had a "burnt XP disk" for a computer with "a serial" (from an unspecified location) and now it's not working. I think WGA is working just as intended, unless you got this serial legitimately, in which case you should contact either Microsoft or the manufacturer of the computer the serial was taken off of.

In the future if you're going to pirate software don't expect to be able to be lazy about it.

No no, I do not plan on pirating anything, I bought this computer and it came with that copy, some one sold it too me. If it is a pirated copy, I will contact Microsoft and see what they will do for me and try explaining maby they will understand my problem.

This happened to a friend of mine but with package machine running Vista, a rogue MS update meant that it was no longer a valid serial key - solved by contacting the vendor and receiving a new serial.

We can check to see if it is valid or not.

Go to How to Tell (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer (not Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)

  • In the left corner click the Validate Windows button.
  • Be patient while the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.
  • Read the instructions on this page while it's loading. You will be prompted to install - click YES.
  • Enter your product key then click continue
  • When it says "Validation Complete" please click Continue to return to your previous activity
  • Copy what it says and paste it here.
