Hi,

I've been trying to get my old PC to boot up. I keep getting different messages. One is NTLDR is missing. Sometimes it does go to my desktop for a few seconds then I get various blue screens that kill the whole process. I want to get this up and running so I can run Anti-malware on it. I guess I have virii all over the old bugger. Where do I even start? Any help would be so appreciated.

Thanks,
actionlover

Dave,

It won't even get that far. One time it went to my desktop and then a blue screen killed it.

I would try running just one stick of RAM if you have two, try just either.

Also give your CPU and GFX fans a real good clean out.

Failing that it may be time to do a Windows repair, you will need a Windows CD to do it.

Let me know and I can tell you how.

Dave,

I cleaned out the fans earlier. I do have only one RAM stick. The only Windows CD is one that I got with another PC. Will that one work? Will it wipe out all my old files?

It depends what CD you have, dig it out and see what it says on it.

Dave,

It has never been opened. It is XP version 2002 - Home Edition. Includes service pack 1. I had the old PC souped up years ago by a tech. He gave me this OEM genuine Windows XP disc. It was attached to a booklet that says " For distribution only with a new PC" on the side of the booklet.

Dave,

I'm getting various messages when I try to boot.

If I try to use the safe mode I get a message box that says choose where you want to boot from. The choices are floppy - CD Rom - Network etc. So I can't even choose to go into the safe mode. So no matter what I try to do I get a message.

I get Trap 000006 errors.
I get NTLDR is missing
I get blank screens
I get a screen with just a highlight blinking.

Each time I get something different.

Should I try to insert this XP disc and try a Windows repair?

It may work, boot off it and follow the instructions, just before you partition/format where you want to install there may be and option to repair.

This is not to be confused with the first repair option which takes you to the recover console.

Do not partition/format the drive. If the second option is not there, the disc is not right for your installed OS.
