Hi sometimes when i try to open a program i get an " Open with " box and then i have to choose what program to use and hope its there. This is very annoying so how do i stop it and get it to open stuff directly like it used to; this just started happening !

And where is the folder so far i can t find it, would like to get into it and maybe remove some stuff ! ? - thanks . . .

You should be able to go to the program, right click on it and adjust the Open With settings like that.

Could be virus related, have you done any scans?

OpenWithAdd utility for Windows® XP and Windows® Vista

Open With listing and their registry locations

Don't go messing around with the registry without backing it up first.

Click on Start then Run and copy the following code into the command line.

Code:
regedit /e C:\BackupReg1.reg
Click the OK button or press the Enter key. This will save a copy of the Registry to a file (C:\BackupReg1.reg) on your local hard drive.

Hi ty for the help, i ran a virus scan a week ago but i ll ran it again but don t think it is a virus, when i right click on this icon to get the menu there is no command " Open with " this opens with pops up when i try to dl normally . I can try right clicking on the folder on c drive see if that pulls up the open with command and yes i am no hurry to mess with the resgistry i always mess it up so
i ll look about for an easy fix . . .

But i did discover that if i save the dl to my desk top then open the software i can drag the dl onto the software and it open s ! So whats that all about ! ?

Let me know if this finds anything.

Download Deckard's Association File Tool (DAFT) and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the daft.exe icon. Read the disclaimer and click OK
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • If it finds faulty file associations, they will appear in red beside a checkbox. If this occurs, just place a tick in the boxes in question.
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Re-scan and save a logfile.
  • By default, it will save as daft.txt
  • Post the contents of that logfile in your next reply.

DAFT doesn't have a homepage and I'm unaware of any automated fixes for 98.

Try installing TweakUI for Win 98. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Tweak_UI_d226.html

There are settings in it that have to do with Open With (I think)
